Denver, CO – August 18, 2020 – Colorado based record label, Luxuryville, is excited to announce their newest record, Disco Donkey, a psychedelic afro-funk inspired journey through African music.

World music is often too obtuse to categorize; however, it generally derives from the continent of Africa, where there are myriad forms of “African” music, varying greatly from north to south and east to west.  Disco Donkey is a select trip through various African styles and rhythms, taking a psychedelic journey through West African, Acoustic Malian, Traditional Ghanaian, Nigerian Afro-funk & Afro-pop music.  The sound reflects traditional African artists like Fela Kuti, Manu Dibango and Ali Farka Toure along side more contemporary, newer acts such as Habib Koite, Baka Beyond and Ikebe Shakedown.  The music twists and turns stylistically through various genres, all the while showcasing the creative production approach to a well known genre.

The musical travels began in 2013 while on safari in southern Africa.  Safaris were generally done very early in the morning or late into the evening, leaving plenty of time in the middle of the day to process the trip musically.  Visiting the Mala Mala reserve at Kruger National Park provided an epic backdrop for wide open, airy vibes of adventureSingita on the other hand gave way to a more intense, natural order to the scene; the aptly named track sounds quite like a prelude to the hunt & kill.  In between, being entertained by the musical and visual impacts of nature and the incredible, home-grown sounds of many of the local workers paved the way for tunes like Giraffes and We Ghana Jam.  All seven tracks add a unique layer to the album that synergizes into a dreamy, funky, psychedelic trip through vivid memories of the continent.

There is a healthy amount of guitar, both acoustic and electric, along with a few percussion cameos.  The Afro-funk horn sound was provided by a trio of competent players, individually on baritone & tenor sax, trumpet and trombone.  The addition of violin really brings out the sublime and surreal character of the musical landscape.  Finally, the newer, creative and fun production style brings really lifts the entire production up and gives it a nice sheen.  As always, the extra dose of psychedelic flavor favors the true music listener, whether in headphones or giant stereo speakers!
