It’s finally here–and it’s official. Algorhythm Trio has just dropped their new album, A Glitch in the Matrix. The album holds ten tracks, ranging from straight-ahead jazz, to modern jazz, to funk, to 70’s jazz-fusion. The standouts include the album’s opener “Folly”, an uptempo straight ahead burner and “Mofongo”, a spicy latin jazz treat with cool rhythmic modulation. “Double Booked” is quite the funky number (and apparently a true story–the names have been changed to protect the innocent). The psychedelic single “The Green Room” closes the album, slowing it down with some really heavy sounding 70’s jazz-fusion/acid rock.
All in all, the album is a great listen and is really embellished by the players themselves, who constantly stretch their creative imaginations both singularly and collectively. The variety of genres and uber-stylistic compositions keep the listener on their toes and makes the entire album interesting and enjoyable. A Glitch in the Matrix certainly stands on its own in the jazz world–keep your eyes and ears out for Algorhythm Trio!
4.5 out of 5 stars.
